Curriculum: Master in Human and Social Sciences, specialism "Migration and Citizenship"

Overview

The specialism "Migration and Citizenship" offered by the SFM (Swiss Forum for Migration and Population Studies) is a taught module unique in Switzerland. This module is part of the Master's Degree in Human and Social Sciences (SHS) of the faculty of humanities. The courses are tought following an innovative interdisciplinary approach. Like all other specialisms, it can be studied in 30, 60 or 90 ECTS credits, and can be augmented by 30 ECTS credits (leadingto an MAwith 120 ECTScredits).

Themes

The specialism in "Migration and Citizenship" approaches two key questions of modern societies in a multidisciplinary manner: the mobility of people and the socioeconomic and political integration of our societies. These questions are intrinsically linked to the organisation of nation-states and their interconnections with the transnationalisation of people and the economy. The specialism of the Master SHS "Migration and Citizenship" offered by the SFM trains students in the analysis of different dimensions of such processes, namely:

. Migration and international mobility, as well as their challenges
. Social, cultural and economic integration and exclusion of migrants
. Demographic and social changes
. Transnational social networks
. Globalisation of cities as transnational places
. Globalisation of economic exchanges
. Welfare states and social integration policies
. Individuals in relation to their knowledge and identities
. Gender and its relationship to mobility, the state and ethnicity

Aims

The Master SHS with "Migration and Citizenship" teaches basic knowledge of sociology, anthropology, political science, geography, history, and psychology relevant to the study of migration and citizenship. On the one hand, this programme allows refining and broadening bachelor training through interdisciplinarity. On the other hand, the programme allows students to specialise in the applied study of migration and theories of citizenship. Contemporary questions around migration are approached in a systematic manner in interdisciplinary seminars. The MA course equally allows the acquisition of competences in qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as versatility for future employment. Selected students writing their dissertation on "Migration and Citizenship" are offered an internship at the Swiss Forum for Migration and Population Studies (SFM), in order to consolidate their methodological skills.

Organisation

Such training means interdisciplinary teaching as well as the learning of different methods. This is the reason why this degree is part of a clearly structured degree programme established by the Centre for the Understanding of Social Processes (MAPS). This centre of expertise, founded in 2007, is unique in Switzerland, and combines teaching and research of its member institutes: Anthropology, geography, sociology, and educational psychology, as well as the SFM.

The Master's programme (90 credits, taking 3 semesters) involves:

. A core module consisting of thematic lectures , interdisciplinary seminars, and methods workshops (qualitative and quantitative) (30 credits)
. A subject-specific module on migration and citizenship studies (30 credits)
. A dissertation on Migration and Citizenship (30 credits)

The distribution of credits changes if the programme is part of a different degree, or if it is meant to be a programme of 30 or 60 ECTS (see downloadable curriculum below).

Teaching

In the compulsory module, the students choose their 30 credits from a large number of courses, seminars and method workshops.

For the specialism "Migration and Citizenship", the students choose 30 credits from a choice of three modules:

. A module "Beyond Social Cohesion" covering the study of classics in migration and citizenship
. A module "Methods of Empirical Analysis " covering analytical skills in social science research
. A module "Dissertation"

For those who wish to complete their degree by using an open module consisting of other courses in the area of migration and citizenship within a MA with 120 ECTS, the SFM suggests three other modules:

. the possibility to combine studies at Neuchâtel with studies offered by other institutes on migration and citizenship, such as the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (Geneva) on the question of development, or the Universities of Lausanne and Lucerne on questions of public health and governability (collaborations with other universities are under consideration)
. the possibility to complete this module entirely outside of Switzerland by completing courses at other institutes working on questions of migration and citizenship, particularly institutes which are member of the European network IMISCOE (http://www.imiscoe.org/), or institutes linked by agreements by the University of Neuchâtel (Erasmus Mundi)
. the possibility to specialise in research with an internship offered by at the SFM, the most important research institute in Switzerland in this area. Students selected for an internship are supported by the SFM in the acquisition of methodological skills.

Course options

Those who wish to concentrate their study in the specialism "Migration and Citizenship" in addition to following another specialism for the MA, should choose the 30 ECTS option in the curriculum downloadable below.

Entry requirements and application

Holders of a bachelor's degree in a discipline of human and social sciences by a Swiss university are admitted to the degree of "Human and Social Sciences" without conditions, provided that they have acquired at least 60 credits in a corresponding area of study, or in a course judged equivalent by the faculty (link to MAPS).

Holders of a bachelor's degree from a foreign university, as well as holders of a bachelor's degree in disciplines other than human and social sciences may be admitted, and their application is explicitly encouraged.
